| Norm Henderson
(Norm Macdonald) was once a fairly well-known -- but not
particularly good -- professional hockey player. Norm's
penchant for gambling and not paying taxes resulted in his
permanent expulsion from the game. Instead of jail, he was
sentenced to community service as a social worker, where his
fresh perspective in the field and lack of patience for office
red tape don't always jibe well with his co-workers.
Laurie (Laurie Metcalf), who
was Norm's social worker during his fall from grace, is now
his colleague and best friend. Laurie is a by-the-book
professional who cares about her clients, takes her job
seriously, and is skilled in helping others work out their
problems. With Norm's help, Laurie learns that it's okay to
sometimes bend -- if not break -- the rules. And with Laurie's
help, Norm learns that there are actually times when the
system does work, if he's just willing to check his sarcasm at
the door.
Rounding out the office staff
are Danny (Ian Gomez), a friend who will defend Norm at all
costs; Mr. Denby (Max Wright), the boss whose goal of staying
sane while waiting to retire is blocked by Norm at every turn;
and Artie (Artie Lange), Norm's screw-up of a half-brother,
who wreaks havoc throughout Norm's life.
Joining the cast this season
is Faith Ford as Shelly Kilmartin, a probation officer who
jilted Norm, who's never quite gotten over it.
Norm premiered on
March 24, 1999.
