Two-time Oscar nominee and three-time Emmy winnerJohn Lithgow ('The World According to Garp,' 'Terms of Endearment') headlines the Golden Globe Award-winning (Outstanding Comedy Series) and Emmy-nominated '3rd Rock from the Sun,' which premiered in January 1996 and was quickly hailed by critics as the breakout hit of the 1995-96 season. Lithgow portrays one of four aliens on a mission to learn everything they can about what they consider to be the most unimportant of planets: Earth (the '3rd rock').

As the high commander of the alien expedition, Lithgow assumes the human body and identity of Dick, the patriarch of the Solomon family and a professor of physics at Pendelton University in the fictional town of Rutherford, Ohio. Dick discovers he has an attraction to Dr. Mary Albright (two-time Emmy winner Jane Curtin, 'Kate & Allie,' 'Saturday Night Live'), with whom he shares an office and a secretary, Nina (Simbi Khali, 'She TV').

The other members of the expedition who are posing as Solomon family members are Sally (two-time Emmy winner Kristen Johnston, 'Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me'), a warrior alien occupying a sexy female human body; oddball Harry (French Stewart, 'Love Stinks'); and Tommy (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, '10 Things I Hate About You'), a wise adult alien suffering through adolescence in the form of a wise-cracking, typical Earth teenager. Broadway veteran Elmarie Wendel ('Little Mary Sunshine') plays their colorful landlady, Mrs. 'Mamie' Dubcek; Wayne Knight ('Seinfeld') stars as Officer Don Orville, the policeman whose uniform and weapons hold an attraction for Sally; and Larisa Oleynik ('The Secret Life of Alex Mack') portrays Tommy's classmate and girlfriend, Alissa Strudwick.

The executive producers/writers are former 'Saturday Night Live' writers Bonnie Turner and Terry Turner (shared credits for 'Wayne's World,' 'That '70s Show'), with David Sacks ('Murphy Brown'), Bob Kushell ('The Simpsons') and Christine Zander ('Saturday Night Live'). Marcy Carsey, Tom Werner and Caryn Mandabach ('Cosby,' 'Roseanne') are also executive producers. '3rd Rock from the Sun' is a production of The Carsey-Werner Company, LLC.
